KUCHING: Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah has highlighted the importance of having more women leaders and creating opportunities to empower women, stressing the need to cultivate lihai (exceptional) women in the community.

The Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development stressed the significance of capacity building, asserting that women should be provided with opportunities to learn and develop various skills, enabling them to stand out in the community.

“We want to see more women leaders, and to achieve that, we must build the capacity of women and empower them to become lihai,” she expressed.

Fatimah acknowledged the existence of many potential women leaders while noting the scarcity of women in leadership positions.

“You need to have skills so that you can stand out, (and) by having more women leaders, this gives more impact to society,” she said at the closing ceremony of the Women Leadership Training Camp for the Federation of Chinese Association Women Section today (June 30) .

Fatimah urged the women who participated in the training camp to join or establish voluntary groups, particularly community well-being groups. She emphasised that joining such groups would enhance the skills and knowledge of women leaders within the community.

During the event, she presented certificates to 120 women participants from the Federation of Chinese Association of Sarawak Women Section who took part in the two-day Leadership Camp held from June 29 to 30.

Among the attendees were Datuk Richard Wee, president of the Federation of Chinese Association Sarawak (FCAS); Noriah Ahmad, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development; Michael Teo, executive advisor of FCAS; and Lee Swee Hiong, president of FCAS Women Section.
