KUALA LUMPUR: Fifteen Malaysian food and beverages (F&B) companies and three government agencies will be participating in FOODEX Japan 2022 from March 8-11 2022 under the Malaysia Pavilion, spearheaded by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).

In a statement, MATRADE said the participation in Asia’s largest annual F&B trade show — which will be held in Chiba, Japan — signifies its commitment to highlighting the strength and capabilities of the Malaysian F&B sector.

“This year’s event will feature a wide variety of Malaysian F&B products such as premium seafood, frozen food, agricultural products, cocoa-based products, palm-oil based products, ready-to-eat products, readymade paste and bakery products,” it said.

MATRADE director of Halal, F&B and agro-based section, Remee Yaakub said Malaysia’s participation in FOODEX would further strengthen the market visibility of Malaysian F&B products in Japan, an important export destination for Malaysia.

“The F&B industry in Japan is import-dependent, with the total market value including retail sales reaching US$500 billion, thus offering ample opportunities for our companies.

“Malaysian companies can leverage their participation in FOODEX to explore new growth areas for export, including collaborations and partnerships for the upcoming World Expo 2025 in Japan and Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya in 2026,” he said.

According to MATRADE, in 2021, Malaysia’s exports of processed food recorded a double-digit growth of 15.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to reach RM24.6 billion from RM21.28 billion in 2020.

Exports to Japan increased by 12.5 per cent y-o-y to RM1.05 billion from RM940 million in 2020.

Japan was Malaysia’s eighth largest export destination for processed food last year, accounting for 4.3 per cent of the total export share in 2021. – BERNAMA
