Fifth former gets top award

KUCHING: Gordon Chong Xue Zhen, a Form 5 student, was awarded SMK Kuching High’s Principal Special Award, the school’s highest award.

Chong was also acknowledged as the school’s model student with his outstanding achievements in academic and curricular activities.

Two other Form Five students — Christabelle Yap Chen Ning and Miguel Foo Ming Yew — received the Student Leadership Award Excellent Academic Award, respectively.

They received their awards from their principal Tan Kiang Tuang during the school’s Excellence Awards Ceremony held at its hall here yesterday.

Tan when speaking at the event congratulated them on their achievements.

He also urged the students to continually emphasise on the four core values — love, respect, happiness and responsibility — in Civic Education.

He described SMK Kuching High as a big family that provides a caring and happy environment for students.

He said with the strong
support from the Teochew Association, School Board of Management and Parent-Teacher Association, the school was equipped with modern facilities such as a projector in every class, two computer labs and a fully-equipped library.

He added that the award ceremony was to recognise the students’ efforts in their excellent academic achievements, apart from highlighting the graduation of Form 5 students.

He also wished Form 5 students all the best in their coming SPM examination and hoped the event would help to instil in them the confidence towards building a better future.

The school’s Parent-Teacher Association president Tan Chee Kiang also advised students to be mentally and physically strong to face the challenges and uncertainty in life.

He encouraged students to sharpen their interpersonal and communication skills.

Also present was School Board of Management president Tan Cho Yian, who represented Kuching Teochew Association Penghulu president Tan Tuan Woo; Ex-Highians Association chairperson Pauline Gan, and School Board of Management vice president Tan Ah Hock.
