KUCHING: A Filipino is believed to have committed suicide due to a failed love affair, said Padawan district police chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan when contacted yesterday.

Aidil said the 38-year-old Filipino, who had converted to Islam and went by the name of Mohammad Ariel Safuan Abdullah, had no permanent job or Permanent Resident status.

Aidil said he was besotted with a girl in Kampung Sebauk, Jalan Landeh, Kota Padawan but the girl’s family was against the union.

Safuan would put up with different friends in the village just to be near the girl, he added.

Aidil said initial investigation revealed that Safuan had climbed a tree bringing a rope with him.

Safuan was clad in a blue shirt and a pair of long jeans when he was found hanging from the tree.

Aidil revealed that Safuan had left behind a note stating that he had gone to see the girl but her family objected.

He further said Safuan had requested the Philippines Embassy to approve an autopsy on him and left a list of names to bring him home for burial.

Police did not suspect any foul play, saying Safuan’s remains had been taken to Sarawak General Hospital morgue for post-mortem.
