Final victim found in Sematan waterfall tragedy

KUCHING: The body of the last victim of the water surge at a waterfall in Kampung Sebat, Sematan, was discovered by members of the public at 7.16am today (Apr 13).

Confirmed by Lundu district police chief DSP Damataries Lautin, the deceased, identified as Vincent Tiong Kung Cheng, was discovered roughly 100 metres from where he was last spotted.

The victim’s father made the identification at the scene.

Yesterday, Steven Chai Pok Yee, the first victim, was pronounced dead by Lundu Hospital paramedics. Both victims hailed from Kota Samarahan.

Fortunately, two of their companions survived, rescued by nearby villagers.

The tragedy is attributed to a sudden surge in water currents that swept all four victims into the river.

Authorities were notified of the incident at 4.55pm yesterday, initiating a rapid search and rescue operation coordinated by multiple emergency services.
