MIRI: A fisherman survived while his father died after their boat capsized in the Lutong waters today (Tuesday), about 11 nautical miles southwest of Kuala Miri.

Miri Maritime director, Maritime Captain Md Fauzi Othman, said the victim, identified as Sadan Seman, 87, and his son, Semido Sadan, 56, were thrown into the sea after their boat was overturned by strong winds with waves about three metres high.

He said 42 personnel from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) rushed to the scene after receiving a report on the incident at around noon.

“At about 12.45pm this afternoon, the two victims were found by a fishing boat that was at the scene. Semido was found safe while his father was found dead.

“Semido said the incident happened suddenly when the boat was hit by strong winds with waves about three metres high,” he said in a statement today.

Md Fauzi said the surviving victim wore a life jacket. He added that Sadan’s body was found floating not far from the scene by a local fisherman who was fishing nearby.
