Five made homeless in Sibu blaze

SIBU: A family of five was left with nothing but clothes on their back after their house at Lorong 5C, Jalan Sentosa in Salim here, was destroyed by fire last night (May 2).

Sibu Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said no injuries or casualties were reported as all of the tenants managed to get out to safety.

The victims are now temporarily staying at their in-laws’ house.

The blaze happened around 8pm and firemen from the Sibu Central and Sungai Merah stations were promptly despatched to the scene.

“By the time the team arrived, the double-storey wooden house was ‘beyond saving’.

The aftermath of the blaze that destroyed a wooden house and made a family of five homeless.

“The fire was doused using water sourced from a drain and the teams brought it under control around 8.40pm.

“They managed to save another house nearby, where its ceiling was slightly damaged,” Andy said.

The whole operation ended around 9.15pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are yet to be ascertained.
