Five years jail for assaulting brother

KUCHING: A jobless man was sentenced to five years’ jail and ordered to be given two strokes of the rotan after he pleaded guilty to causing hurt to his brother with a knife and illegally possessing a kerambit (curved knife) in a public place.

Session Court Judge Steve Ritikos ordered Mohamad Ridzuan Aris from Kampung Lidah Tanah near Bau to serve his sentence from Nov 18.

The 29 year-old admitted to committing the offence under Section 324 read with Section 326A of the Penal Code which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years jail, fine or whipping.

The accused admitted causing hurt to his older brother 35-year-old Mohd Khairulafza by using a knife at about 10.30pm on Nov 1 at their home in Kampung Lidah Tanah.

The victim sustained a wound over the lateral left wrist after trying to stop his brother from scaring people with a knife and while attempting to stop accused doing so, he was attacked and wounded on his wrist.

He immediately lodged a police report for the safety of his family safety and the suspect was subsequently arrested in a mosque in the village.

The kerambit used by the accused was seized from him.
