BINTULU: All parties be it the government, producers and consumers have a role to play in ensuring food consumed is safe.

Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said this is because food is more than just a source of energy for survival.

It is also a reflection of culture, a symbol of the success of cooperation, and an economic driver of a society, he said.

He added that clean, safe and healthy food is a reflection of individual habits, family habits, community culture and also the sustainability of the food industry chain and the local economy.

“Consumption of dirty, spoiled and unsafe food can cause food poisoning, therefore, before eating any food, people are reminded to practise the technique we learned today which is “Look, Smell and Taste”, he said at the celebration of World Food Safety Day and Nutrition Month 2022 at Farley Supermarket grounds yesterday (September 10).

He was represented by Bintulu Development Authority general manager Datuk Muhammad Yakup Kari.

As a result, he noted, selecting safe, clean, and healthy food is the duty of all parties, from the individual to the community.

Tiong explained that unbalanced eating habits can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes in the long run.

“On the other hand, excessive salt consumption and less consumption of fruits and whole grains will disturb the internal balance of the individual’s body.

As a result, he advised the public to begin consuming food in a safe, clean, and nutritious manner right away.

Meanwhile, he expects that the organisation of a programme like this will serve as a catalyst for corporations, individuals, and other culinary establishments to receive recognition from the Ministry of Health.

Also present were also Bintulu Divisional Health Officer, Dr. Melvin Chung Hsien Liang, Deputy Resident of Bintulu Division, Hussaini Hakim, general manager of Farley Group of Companies, Eijing Lau and Chief Assistant Director of Sarawak State Health Department (Food Safety and Quality), Eraou Batang.
