Foreigner jailed 5 months for possession of another person’s IC

SRI AMAN: An Indonesian man, who pleaded guilty to possessing another individual’s identity card to get medical treatment, was sentenced to five months in jail last Friday.

The 28-year-old accused from Kampung Rasau Ketungau Ulu Kabupaten Sintang Kachamatan Senaning, was charged under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) at the Sri Aman Magistrate’s Court.

The indictment provides for a fine of up to RM20,000 or a jail term of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.

According to the Sarawak National Registration Department (NRD), the accused was fined RM5,000 in default five months’ jail.

The accused did not pay the fine.

After serving the prison sentence, the accused should also be referred to the Immigration Department for the purpose of repatriation to his country of origin.

On Aug 3, the state NRD received information from the Sri Aman Hospital regarding a male patient who possesses and uses an identity card that does not belong to him.

Following that, the department’s Investigation and Enforcement unit detained the accused as soon as he was done receiving treatment.

In the meantime, the state NRD assured that they would intensify their enforcement efforts to detect and arrest foreigners using false identification cards or Malaysian identity cards to access any services in Malaysia.

The public is also urged to come forward and share information regarding any misuse of identity cards issued by NRD by sending further information to pro@jpn.gov.my.
