KUCHING: The Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) is stressing the use of technology to resolve issues confronting the department.

Its director Datuk Hamden Mohammad said that to keep up with globalisation, digital transformation, and implementation of the digital economy, the department cannot afford to give technology the cold shoulder.

He said the use of technology is important and relevant in driving the development and economic development of the country and the state.

“FDS does not want to be left behind in the pursuit of the status as a dynamic society that is highly competitive and updated with the current changes.

“Furthermore, we also support the ambitions and efforts of the Sarawak government which takes proactive steps by outlining and initiating digital transformation steps where the development and digital economy will be the core of a new economy under the leadership of our Premier.

“To support these proactive initiatives and efforts, FDS is prepared to hold strategic collaborations with various parties covering various fields such as research, consulting and projects involving society that can contribute to success in the digital economy sector that is able to compete in Industrial Revolution 4.0,” he said.

Hamden was speaking at the Forestry Training Institute (FORTRAIN) graduation ceremony at the Sarawak Foundation today.

He urged employees to hone their skills so that they can compete in an increasingly challenging global stage.

“In line with current developments, it is time for us in FDS to start using the latest technology in the implementation of daily tasks.

“However, this requires employees who are skilled and trained in handling the latest technology.

“Therefore, it is hoped that the forestry training at FORTRAIN will provide the necessary technological skills in the management and care of forests in Malaysia in the future.

“Our department is ready to cooperate with FORTRAIN in this regard,” he said.
