KUCHING: The view to form a single multiracial party in Sarawak has been taken into consideration but such a proposal will take time to be implemented, said Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“When the time is right or the public have formed their opinion and understand the importance of unity, then we will implement it (the suggestion) but it will take time,” said Johari.

He was commenting on the proposal by Parti Rakyat Sarawak President, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) should not have any dominating partners such as the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) in Barisan Nasional (BN) as well as the need to set up a single multiracial party in the state.

The Chief Minister said that Sarawakians must be able to understand the concept first in order for the suggestion to be implemented.

GPS is a Sarawak-based political alliance formed on June 12, 2018 by four former BN component parties, the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), following the coalition’s defeat in this year’s general election.
