Former security guard pleads not guilty to sexual assault

KUCHING: A former security guard at a boarding secondary school pleaded not guilty before the Sessions Court here today for sexually assaulting a female student on Jan 18 this year.

The 24-year-old accused claimed trial after the charge was read by an interpreter before Judge Maris Agan.

According to the charge, he allegedly committed physical sexual abuse by touching the private parts, breasts and thighs of the 14-year-old victim.

He allegedly committed the act in a girls’ dormitory at a secondary school in Bau, at about 1.35 am, last Jan 18.

Therefore, the accused is charged under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which carries a prison sentence of not more than 20 years and caning, if convicted.

During the proceeding, deputy public prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian did not offer any bail for the accused as the offence is not bailable and to prevent the accused from absconding.

However, the court released the accused on RM5,000 bail with a local surety with a permanent job.

The court then set the mention date for case management on March 9.
