KUCHING: Primary and secondary school students here in the city will be able to use free school bus service, starting Aug 3, says Yayasan Sarawak director Azmi Bujang.

The service will cover 30 primary and secondary schools here, and the nearby Padawan District.

“The service will cover 18 zones, from SMK St Teresa all the way up to SMK Bako.

“A total of 46 school buses will start operating full capacity, serving 22 routes in Kuching and Padawan,” he said at the briefing for the Free School Bus programme with the media at Yayasan Sarawak, Jalan Sultan Tengah yesterday.

With the resumption of schools next week, he said operations would face many hiccups along the way.

Thus, he called all parents, stakeholders and service providers to provide feedback on the programme.

“During the initial stage, the service will be carried out under the Kuching and Samarahan Bumiputera Bus Operators Association.

“Once the programme has taken off, we will be working with other school bus operators that can accommodate students in other places,” he added.

Azmi also said the free school bus service came with a mobile app to track the movement of the buses.

“This is for parents to monitor where the bus is as well as for Yayasan Sarawak to monitor the performance of the bus drivers.”
