Funds for flood mitigation projects

KUCHING: The Kuching Phase 2 Flood Mitigation Project in Sarawak  is  among the 33 flood mitigation projects nationwide that will receive a total of  RM11.8 billion, under Budget 2024.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the letters of acceptance (SST) for 24 projects, worth RM5.1 billion were expected to be issued from this month while the SST of the remaining projects would be issued in the first quarter of 2024.  

He said the government would provide RM20 million to 150 local authorities to carry out repairs on damaged drains to reduce the risk of flash floods.

He also said the government had provided RM563 million for the repair of slopes nationwide.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said this when tabling Budget 2024  under the theme “Madani Economy: Empowering the People” in Dewan Rakyat here yesterday.

He also said Sarawak and Sabah would continue to enjoy the community drumming programme (for subsidised fuel and basic food items for rural areas);   RM225 million had been allocated for the purpose.

The programme, he said, would be expanded to include Engkerebai in Mukah, Sarawak and Zon Abai in Sandakan, Sabah.

Meanwhile, the Orang Asli and the indigenous people of Sabah and Sarawak will also enjoy part of the RM330 million financing facilities available from National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (Tekun).
