KUCHING: In a heartwarming event that radiated nostalgia, more than 60 alumni of Tanjong Lobang College came together after 48 years, rekindling old friendships and memories at the Samudra Hotel here yesterday (Aug 27).
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala, who was among the attendees, said that the gathering was a significant event as it was the first major reunion in nearly five decades.
“We are very happy to reconnect with our classmates from 1974 and 1975. At this juncture in our lives, when many of us are preoccupied with various commitments, taking the time to come together is truly special.
“We come from all around the state, including Kuching, Miri, Lawas, Limbang, and Sibu. Our class was not large in number, which enabled us to foster close bonds. I still remember a lot of the things we did,” he said.
The current reunion primarily featured a dinner, but Gerawat voiced hopes for more expansive plans for future reunions.
“We tapped into our network of contacts, which is why we can have a big group this time.
“Looking ahead, I hope the next reunion can be longer and include more activities. Perhaps they can bring their family along too,” he added.
Amid the shared joy, the president of the Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Datuk Mutang Tagal shared his emotions about the event.
“Reuniting after 48 years has evoked profound emotions. While some have transitioned to parenthood and even grandparenthood, the memory of their faces remains vivid, albeit with a few changes.
“Yet, it’s also a solemn moment as we remember over 20 of our classmates who have passed on,” he added.
Also present was the dinner’s organising chairman Kasim Gani.
