MIRI: All Sarawak needs is just 10 more years. It will emerge as Malaysia’s powerhouse in producing intellectual human capital.

The state is moving on the right track, which is why Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is confident this is achievable.

“We are investing in intellectual human capital development. Sarawak does not mind investing in this critical area because that is the future,” the chief minister said at SJK(C) Chung Hua Tudan’s grand opening ceremony of its new building and earth-breaking of the school’s multi -purpose hall project yesterday.

“I believe in another 10 years this will become a reality. Our command of Science, Mathematics, besides English, Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia will give us the edge,” he said.

The school’s new block, a three-storey building comprising 36 classrooms, was completed last October at a cost of RM2.8 million.

The construction of the school’s multi-purpose hall is expected for completion next year on a budget of RM1.5 million.

Abang Johari believed that with schools like SJK(C) Chung Hua Tudan having undergone infrastructural upgrading, Sarawak would be able to produce intellectual human capital within the time frame.

“It is for that same reason that we established our own Education, Science and Technological Research Ministry, to better enhance our
(education) system,” he said.

On the possibility of Sarawak tying up with universities from China, he said, “Why not, if they are willing to come … I’m just saying … we can produce intellectual human capital with their help … after all, on its own, China has shown that it is capable
of producing its own intellectual human capital at quite a rate,” he said.

Abang Johari congratulated the school’s board of management, which is led by former deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, for their success in starting the school in 2007.

He was also impressed by the 71 percent bumiputera population of the school.

He said the school has brought students from various ethnic groups together under one
roof.

At the event, Dr Chan received contributions from private firms and individuals to help finance the school’s multi-purpose hall project.
