KUCHING: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Sarawak chairman Jaziri Alkaf A Suffian has described Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposal to limit the premiership tenure to two terms and to stop party hopping as a good move.

He pointed out that this was to make the political and democratic system in the country more dignified and to give it integrity.

“Some may say that it is unfair to limit the time and power of a politician, but the fact is that people are fed up and tired of the non-stop politicking that focuses on personal gain rather than benefits for the people.

“Therefore, the move to limit the tenure of the prime minister to only two terms is good as a check and balance measure and to prevent abuse of power through holding office for too long,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Saturday (Aug 14).

Jaziri added that by introducing an anti-hoping law should be able to prevent members of Parliament from being influenced by ‘gifts’ from certain parties.

“The proposal by Muhyiddin is a sincere effort. We want to eliminate the abuse of power and party hoppers to compel politicians to be more honest and dignified.

“Politicians can then focus on serving the people and the country without fear of being weakened or distracted by gratification of various kinds,” he said.

Jaziri also emphasises the importance of ‘politics of service’ because the mandate given by the people should be given the highest priority.
