KUCHING: A Sarawak Eco-Warriors and Kuching Beach Cleaners project, Tanami – which focuses on raising awareness of the importance of food security and sustainable planting techniques –  opened its doors for the first time to the public.

Welcoming anyone who wishes to learn how to sustainably plant their own fruits and vegetables, the project located at the Dyslexia Association of Sarawak is a combination of the words ‘Tanah’ and ‘Kami’. It will be operating every Sunday from 9am to 12noon.

From giving guided tours, rock painting to decorating the garden, visitors are also introduced to the ‘permaculture’ concept which encourages the planting of different plants in close proximity.

The idea is to allow plants to support each other and create living space that naturally deters pests and organically fertilises the soil.

Aside from the opening of an in-person community garden, the team understands the implications of COVID-19 and also offers an alternative planting kit for those who wish to try out planting from the comfort of their homes.

“I am grateful to be involved in such a meaningful community project. I hope my little steps can lead to something that can benefit others in the long run,” Tanami project assistant Nicole Kueh said yesterday.

The programme also encourages youth empowerment by providing leadership opportunities for youths. This programme is supported by the Global Environment Facility and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

In an effort to create more opportunities for youth participation and leadership in environmental advocacy, the team actively works to develop similar programmes such as workshops, webinars and events.

Apart from that, starting from yesterday (March 7) until March 19, the Green Microfiction Challenge is a creative writing competition that encourages youths aged 13 to 24 to write and think critically about the environment.
