SIBU: Opposition Parti Bumi Kenyalang has called on the federal government to extend a helping hand to tackle floods in Sarawak.

Its president Voon Lee Shan said the federal government had a few days ago approved an immediate fund of RM50 million to fight floods in Johor but none for Sarawak and Sabah even though both states were also affected.

“If the federal government cannot come with RM50 million, at least a few million ringgit may do to help the Sarawak government fight the floods,” he said in a statement today (March 5).

Voon stressed that there are many flood-prone areas in Sarawak.

“In Sarawak’s Kuching division, the areas that experience frequent floods are Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, Taman Bong Chin, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batu Lintang, Lorong Kapor 10, Ulu Maong, Happy Valley, Taman Evergreen, the junction to Capital Garden, Jalan Burung Durian, Jalan Batu Kawa, Desa Wira, Kampung Gita, Sarawak General Hospital, Jalan Batu Lintang, RPR Batu Kawa and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, in the Mukah division, Voon pointed out that Pekan Daro, Saliran in Daro and surrounding areas are prone to flooding as well as several areas in Baram and Sibu.

“Several areas in Kuching, Serian, and Sri Aman have been hit by floods due to heavy rainfall over the past few days.

“It was reported that the number of flood victims is about 300 individuals and about 70 families are affected,” he said.
