BALI: The recent amendment to the Electricity Ordinance holds significant implications for homeowners in Sarawak, allowing them to instal solar panels on rooftops, generating electricity up to 50 KW.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the amendment permits homeowners to sell excess electricity generated by solar panels back to the grid without requiring a licence, providing an additional source of income for houseowners.

“This would also be an additional source of clean power alongside other renewable sources, especially hydropower.

“This new law will pave the way for innovative designs in housing, aligning with the historic policy shift, and it will also open further opportunities for the engineering fraternity in Sarawak,” he said during a dinner organised by the Sarawak Association of Bumiputera Consultant Engineers at a local hotel here last night (Nov 21).

Referring to the law empowering Petros to be the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak, Abang Johari noted that the second law being tabled in the current State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, is important and historic.

The law designates Petros, the state’s oil and gas company, as the exclusive entity responsible for gas distribution in Sarawak. He said this aligns with the state’s gas roadmap initiative that would involve both LPG and offshore gas feedstock to downstream industries.

The Premier stressed that the initiative would also unlock further opportunities for Sarawak’s engineers, requiring diverse engineering services and expertise to achieve the objectives outlined in the roadmap.

Accompanying the Premier were Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Zaidel Lariwoo and senior government officials. The delegation arrived in Bali yesterday afternoon (Nov 21) to attend a three-day 41st Conference of the Asean Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO).

In the opening ceremony today (Nov 22), Abang Johari is conferred the Distinguished Honorary Fellow Award from the Asean Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO). Subsequently, he will address approximately 1,000 delegates from 10 Asean countries.
