KUCHING: Hope Place, a charitable non-governmental organisation, has stepped forward to provide aid and support to two elderly individuals, who are living alone and facing weak health conditions and financial hardships.

The first individual is Chong Kien, a 66-year-old resident of Asajaya, who was visited by the NGO after his relatives reached out for help.

Chong resides in a wooden stilted house, surrounded by his small coconut farm, where he has been earning a living by planting and selling coconuts for many years.

Earlier this year, Chong suffered a near-fatal accident at his home, resulting in a neck injury.

His neighbors found him lying on the floor of his house after not seeing him at his farm for three days.

He was subsequently admitted to the hospital, where metal screws were inserted into his neck.

Currently, Chong is in the process of recovery and is unable to engage in heavy work, leading to the temporary abandonment of his coconut farm.

In addition to receiving a monthly assistance of RM500 from the Welfare Department, Hope Place is providing Chong with basic food aid to alleviate his financial strain.

Hope Place also extended assistance to another elderly individual, Kahtijah Yusof, a 61-year-old resident of Jalan Stakan.

Kahtijah used to work at a coffee shop but faced challenges due to the movement control order (MCO) and her thyroid condition, leaving her unable to find employment.

Originally from Peninsular Malaysia, Kahtijah moved to Kuching over 30 years ago after getting married.

Now divorced and without children, she has lost contact with her remaining relatives. Living in a dilapidated wooden house without access to electricity or water supply, Kahtijah expressed her deep gratitude for the support provided by Hope Place.

Due to repeated flooding at her home, she has lost most of her personal documents, except for her identification card. Hope Place is currently supplying Kahtijah with continuous basic food supplies to assist her in meeting her daily needs.
