KUCHING: The newly appointed Malaysian Ambassador to Peru, Fenny Nuli, pledges to promote tourism and trade between Malaysia and Peru once she resumes office.

She revealed that as of today, the total trade between Malaysia and Peru only amounted to USD300 million.

“There were a lot of efforts taken to enhance better trade ties between the two countries. However, one of the major obstacles would be the distance.

“Lima, the capital and the largest city in Peru, is famous for its Inca civilisation and tourist attraction, Machu Picchu.

“In line with the state’s effort to enhance its tourism industry, we can probably figure something out to kick start collaborations between Lima and Sarawak in tourism.

“I will discuss with the ministers in the state and see how it goes,” she said in an exclusive interview with the New Sarawak Tribune and its sister paper Suara Sarawak at a local hotel here yesterday.

Fenny said she would also meet Malaysian citizens in Peru.

She added that she would definitely hold programmes with the Malaysian citizens in Peru soon and one of the objectives would be to focus on promoting Malaysia to the people of Peru.

“I was also made to understand that not many people in Peru know about Malaysia, especially its culture,” she explained.

Sarawakian Fenny is the first Iban woman to serve in Peru as Malaysia’s Ambassador. She received her Letter of Credence from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at a ceremony held at Istana Negara on Oct 3.

The appointment is for three years. Besides Peru, she will also be the Malaysian Ambassador for Bolivia, Colombia and Panama.

Fenny will leave for Peru some time in November once she has made courtesy calls on federal ministers and Sarawak dignitaries.

Fenny, 48, started her career as an administrative and diplomatic officer with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1997.
