MUKAH: The Igan constituency’s town area will undergo development, boosting its economy.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya said that several projects are currently underway in the area.

One such project is the construction of a road from Kebuwau to Sibu, which, once completed, will shorten the distance from Igan to Sibu to only 70 kilometres.

In addition, a coastal road is also being developed, which will enter Kampung Igan through Batang Igan, Batang Paloh, Batang Lassa, and Sungai Pasi. He told this to reporters after officiating a ‘Belangger Mija’ ceremony in Kampung Sekerang in Igan yesterday.

Dr Juanda said that these projects will be a game changer for the residents of Igan and will assist the economic sector in the constituency.

The RM300 million Igan Bridge project and the RM700 million Kebuwau to Sibu road project aim to improve connectivity and create more activities and opportunities for residents. The ultimate goal is to attract more tourists to the area by making it easier to travel around the constituency with better connectivity.

Dr Juanda added that the Igan waterfront is popular among visitors and the longest in Sarawak. It currently stretches from Kampung Sekerang to Kampung Baru Ismail. A new waterfront in Kampung Baru Dagang has been approved, with RM1.1 million set aside for construction works, beginning at the end of the year.
