KUCHING: Parents and teachers play a very important role in instilling good values in children.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said it is crucial that both the parents and teachers inculcate the right values in children during their formative years.

“The character or personality of an individual is shaped by the moral and religious values one upholds.

“It is the dominant factor which will determine how one uses knowledge, skills or social for personal development or for the good of the community and mankind at large,” she said in a Facebook post yesterday (Sept 13).

As such, she reminded parents as well as teachers to instil good values in children early.

“As the proverb says ‘melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya’ (bend a bamboo while it is still a shoot),” she said.

This Malay proverb gives the meaning that to start developing good habits, it must be done from an early age.
