KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has expressed his full support for the appointment of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Deputy Prime Minister.

He described this appointment as a good move by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“Sharing the same views with our Sarawak leaders, the appointment of our new Deputy Prime Minister was a wise and strategic political move because he (Ismail Sabri) is a very capable man, and strategic because our Prime Minister is putting an Umno (United Malays National Organisation) leader a step closer to the position of being Prime Minister.

“The appointment will hopefully ease Umno’s jitters and give our present federal government a good opportunity to fight Covid-19 which has become a major concern for all Malaysians,” he said on his official blog on Thursday (July 8).

He said Ismail Sabri’s new position was important, particularly in administering the nation in the current pandemic.

“He needs our full support in making it happen because unity is strength,” said Abdul Karim, who is also Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister.

He believed that Ismail Sabri could be seen as among the most experienced to hold this post amid the senior ministers and other contenders.

He pointed out that Ismail Sabri was also a senior parliamentarian and had held positions in several ministries before this new appointment.

“With his vast experience, he will be able to assist the Prime Minister in addressing our country’s economic and security needs, as well as managing the ongoing pandemic.”

The Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday (July 7) announced the appointment of Ismail Sabri as Deputy Prime Minister and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein as Senior Minister (Security).
