KUCHING: Jalan Matang Baru, previously marred by delays, is now progressing ahead of schedule following its commencement in May this year.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development I (Infrastructure Development), Aidel Lariwoo said the project had achieved 4.72 per cent completion, surpassing the planned timeline by 2.17 per cent.

“However, a minor hindrance has arisen due to the presence of a 33 kV power line at the project site. We urge the utility company to work with the Public Works Department (JKR) to relocate the power lines so that the contractor can continue work.”

During a site visit at Taman Dahlia, Matang here on Monday (July 24), Aidel discussed the project’s objectives, which include upgrading Jalan Matang Baru into a double carriageway (four lanes) along its 4.4km stretch, extending from Courts Mammoth to the Malihah junction. “This transformation aligns with JKR U4 urban standard road specifications.”

Assured of the project’s success, he confirmed that the appointed rescue contractor, Miracont Sdn Bhd, possesses the capabilities to undertake the project at this scale.
