Local man jailed, fined for careless driving

THE accused (left) has been sentenced to two months and seven days in jail after failing to pay a RM5,000 fine for careless driving on March 28 this year.

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a local man to seven days in jail and a RM5,000 fine in default of two months’ jail for ramming through a police roadblock while driving under the influence of drugs early this year.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi meted out the sentence to the 31-year-old accused after he pleaded guilty to the act committed on March 28 this year.

The accused failed to pay the fine and he will serve two months and seven days in jail.

Other than that, the accused lost the eligibility to hold or obtain a driving licence for a period of not less than five years.

According to Padawan district police chief Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, the accused committed the act around 6.35am along Jalan Kuching-Serian.

“The accused was driving his car in a manner that is dangerous to the public such as driving under the influence of drugs.

“Because of that, the accused crashed into an ‘Op COVID-19’ roadblock, police car and other cars,” he said.

The accused was charged under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333/87) for careless driving.
