KUCHING: A total of 84 young golfers are set to vie for the championship in the first-ever Sarawak Bumiputera Amateur Golf Association (PGABS) 2024 Inter-State Junior Golf Tournament.

Sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association, the four-day tournament will take place at the Sarawak Golf Club (KGS), Petra Jaya here, from March 4 to 7.

Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the tournament will witness the participation of 56 male and 28 female golfers, representing various states, including Sarawak, Perlis, Perak, Sabah, Kedah, Pahang, Melaka, the Federal Territory, and Brunei Darussalam.

He noted the diverse categories of the tournament, encompassing individual categories for both boys and girls, boys team category, and women team category.

“There will be substantial prizes for the winners in each category. The champion of the boys team category will receive RM8,000 in cash, while the girls team category champion will be awarded RM6,000 in cash.

“Runners-up in both categories will receive cash prizes of RM5,000 and RM4,000, with third place earning RM3,000 and RM2,000 in cash, respectively.

“Additionally, winners in the individual boys and girls categories will each receive cash prizes of RM3,000 for first place, RM2,000 for second place, and RM1,500 for third place,” he detailed during the press conference held at Baitulmakmur Building II on Friday (Mar 1).

Given the age bracket of participants (under 21), Abdul Karim expressed confidence that the tournament would expose state-level junior golfers to a higher level of competition, aiding in their preparation for the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024.

“This tournament will serve as a platform for each state to evaluate their players and make a final shortlist for their respective state representations.

“We are committed to ensuring that the participating teams feel warmly welcomed during their time here,” he added.
