KUCHING: It is imperative for Sarawak to consider according itself the status of a duty-free region given its possible economic returns said a Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) leader.

The party’s deputy information chief Andy Lawrence said this is timely given Sarawak’s unique advantages, political stability, and the shifting geopolitical landscape.

“The shift could boost Sarawak in terms of its economy and the timing is strategic with Indonesia’s administrative capital shift.

“The Sarawak government can utilise Kapit district, particularly Kapit town, as a gateway to the new capital, Nusantara, in Kalimantan.

“It could serve as a catalyst, triggering a multiplier effect that revitalises the development of the mid-Rejang region, which has lagged behind other parts of Sarawak,” he said in a statement.

Andy said with Sarawak being a duty-free region, it would improve trade activities benefitting its diversified economy.

“Beyond the traditional oil & gas sector, Sarawak has emerged as a key player in tourism, renewable energy, and thriving industries like those at the Bintulu Samalaju Industrial Park.

“Enhanced trade and business opportunities and the duty-free status will attract both tourists and businesses seeking tax-free shopping and investment opportunities.

“This will lead to increased trade, business setups and collaborations, and boost the finance sector,” he added.

He said the increased tourism and retail sales will boost government revenue through business setups, licensing fees, and increased property value.

“This will provide the government with additional resources to invest in infrastructure, education, and healthcare

“At the same time, it can combat smuggling activities by providing legal and competitive avenues for consumers,” he said.
