Man, 32, fined RM1,500 for mischief

KUCHING: A 32-year old man was sentenced to a RM1,500 fine or one month’s imprisonment in default by the Magistrate Court yesterday for damaging household property because his parents refused to give him money.

Judge Zubaidah Sharkawi sentenced Nelson, 32, after he pleaded guilty before the judge to a charge read by an interpreter.

According to the charge, the accused purposely damaged the property of a 63-year-old victim causing a loss of RM3,000 at their residence in Taman Desa Wira, Jalan Batu Kawah around 10 am on February 12.

The accused is charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code (for mischief) which carries a jail term of two years or a fine or both, if convicted.

Based on the facts of the case, the complainant’s son (the accused) got angry and broke the plates and smashed the house’s wall because the parents refused to give him money.

Besides that, due to the frequent incident of him asking money, it was suspected that the complainant’s son was under the influence of drugs.

Fearful of the complainant’s safety, the complainant lodged a police report for further action and investigation.

On February 13, around 2 pm, the accused was arrested by the police at the family’s residence.

Prosecuting Officer ASP Rogayah Rosli requested the court to sentence the accused as a lesson for him.
