Man pleads not guilty to drug charges

SIBU: A 32-year-old man pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges in High Court today (June 19).

The charge was explained to Wong Lee Ming with the help of an interpreter.

The trial is scheduled to take place from January 22 to 26, 2024, as decided by Justice Wong Siong Tung.

According to the charge sheet, Wong is accused of trafficking a dangerous drug, specifically 69.82 grams of Methamphetamine. The alleged incident took place on February 16, around 7.10 pm, at a house on Jalan Ek Dee.

The offense falls under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under subsection 39B(2) of the same Act.

If convicted, the accused may face the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, he may be subjected to a minimum of 15 strokes of whipping.

Wong will remain in prison until further notice, as the offense is non-bailable.

The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mark Kenneth Netto, while the accused had legal counsel Darren Ling representing him.
