Man suffers burns while trying to escape fire

KUCHING: A man suffered burns while attempting to escape a morning fire that destroyed two houses in Kampung Tabuan Haji Drahman on Tuesday (Sept 28).

The 40-year-old victim suffered 30 percent burns on his stomach, hands and feet while jumping out of a window to save himself.

A spokesman from the State Fire Department said the victim was provided initial treatment by the emergency medical rescue services (EMRS) unit before being sent to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

The incident happened around 9am and firemen from Tabuan Jaya and Padungan fire stations were despatched to the scene.

Upon arriving, the team confirmed that both houses belonging to a family of four were already burned down and extinguishing works followed suit.

The fire which left a family of four homeless was put out at around 11am.

In the midst of the fire, firefighters managed to save some unburned RM50 cash notes. The money was handed over by Kuching Zone 1 Operations officer Nazari Harun to the homeowner.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still being investigated by the fire forensic unit.
