SIBU: Some of the structures in the old Sungai Merah Market will be retained in the building which is being rebuilt at a cost of RM4.58 million.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Market and Petty Traders Standing Committee chairman Albert Tiang who gave the assurance said the belian wooden structure found in the old market would be reused in the project.

“The old signboard of Sungai Merah Market which is an icon for this market will also be maintained and displayed in the new food court later. Every letter on the signboard will be reused,” he told reporters after inspecting the construction progress here Wednesday (Mar 22).

According to Tiang, many parties had voiced concern over the project to rebuild the Sungai Merah Market, which is one of the historic buildings in town.

He said the reconstruction, which is scheduled to be completed in January next year, will provide for an area of 2,000 square metres compared to the old market which only comprised 200 square metres.

He said it would have 17 stalls for vegetables and meat compared to the previous 12 stalls, six food stalls and three drink stalls.

Previously there were only three food stalls and three drink stalls there.

“The more modern and contemporary double-storey building will see the lower portion being used as parking space,” he added.
