KUCHING: Michael Kong Feng Nian, the Special Assistant to Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, has urged the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) to swiftly conduct a comprehensive investigation into the pricing practices of airlines and take decisive action to rectify the issue.

Expressing deep concern and dismay over the exorbitant airfare prices for flights from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur in the coming days, he revealed his shock at discovering that a one-way economy seat ticket costs more than RM2,000 as he prepared for an official trip to Kuala Lumpur this week.

“This exorbitant pricing amounts to nothing short of daylight robbery, and it is imperative that immediate action be taken to address this issue.

“At a time when the government is actively taking steps to lower living costs and alleviate financial burdens on the people, it is unacceptable for airlines to engage in profiteering practices that unfairly exploit consumers,” he said on Wednesday (Feb 21).

Kong called for MAVCOM to urgently investigate these exorbitant airfare prices and take appropriate measures to ensure fair and reasonable pricing for air travel.

He stressed that affordable air travel is crucial for individuals and businesses alike and that excessive pricing not only imposes financial strain on travellers but also hampers economic activity and mobility.

“It is imperative that MAVCOM intervenes to protect the interests of consumers and ensures that air travel remains accessible and affordable for all Malaysians.”

He urged MAVCOM to fulfil its mandate by conducting a thorough investigation into airline pricing practices and taking decisive action to address the issue.

He pointed out the need to prevent airlines from exploiting consumers with unjustifiably high airfare prices, especially during these challenging times.

“It is time for MAVCOM to uphold the rights of consumers by ensuring fair and transparent pricing in the aviation industry,” Kong stressed.
