KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched the “Bring Your Own Bottle” (BYOB) campaign in conjunction with World Water Day 2024, as part of the council’s efforts to reduce the usage of single-use plastic bottles.

In collaboration with Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd, a wastewater management solutions provider, MBKS aims to curb the generation of non-biodegradable single-use plastic bottles that contribute to land and river pollution.

“This campaign aims to encourage people to bring their reusable bottles to events and commit to protecting the environment.

“In support of this campaign, we will be distributing stainless steel bottles adorned with prominent tourist landmarks to all MBKS staff,” said MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng during the launching event held at the MBKS lobby here today (Mar 22).

“Furthermore, we intend to extend this culture beyond our organisation by introducing these bottles to both locals and tourists in the subsequent phase of our campaign,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sar Alam Indah Sdn Bhd director Bernard Yong said SAl is an environmental company specialising in the management of wastewater, including the treatment of septic sludge.

“Our primary goal is to prevent contamination of our river waters by untreated septic sludge and fecal matter, as our rivers are vital sources of water for drinking and daily needs.

“Besides human waste, another major pollutant is plastics in the form of single-use plastic bottles.”

The ceremony was attended by MBKS councillors and Sar-Alam management staff, emphasising the significance of collaboration in enhancing public awareness and empowering communities to actively reduce single-use plastic bottle pollution to care for the environment.

All members of the public are encouraged to visit the MBKS building lobby and bring their own bottles to the refill station.
