MIRI: The movement control order (MCO) might be implemented again in Sarawak, along with further restrictions due to the rising Covid-19 cases.

This was said by Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting when met on Saturday (Jan 9) before officiating at a youth programme at Pustaka Miri.

Although many countries, including Malaysia, are slowly opening up their borders, several cities and regions in Asia have brought back tighter measures following an increase in the number of infections in recent weeks.

When asked if Sarawak would follow suit, Ting added it is likely that the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will introduce tighter restrictions.

He also advised those who wish to come back to Sarawak to not do so unless necessary.

“This is because most of the cases recorded are imported cases. Initially we had the MCO, which was then extended to the recovery movement control order (RMCO).

“It’s always difficult for the government, businesses and the public to struggle with the impact of a prolonged lockdown.

“Considering the number of cases recorded recently, I think it is time for us to consider bringing back the MCO,” he added.

Recently, SDMC said in a statement that two babies — a four-month-old and one-year-old— are among the latest Covid-19 cases detected in Sarawak.
