KAPIT: The implementation of mega projects like the Baleh and Murum Hydroelectric Dams will elevate Kapit’s status from a small town to a city.

The Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) reported Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (Development and Infrastructure) Aidel Lariwoo as saying that Kapit would play an important role as a generator of electricity to the outside world, including Indonesia one day, making Kapit a focus area in the central region of Sarawak.

He said this during a working visit to the proposed Nanga Menuan ferry and access road to Baleh Dam organised by the Kapit Division Public Works Department (JKR) Office yesterday.

“The purpose of the visit was to hear the presentation of the project status from the JKR Kapit Division and JKR central region which explained the latest status of the project so as not to be left behind and to detect problems or shortcomings with the projects,” he said.

On a separate occasion in the afternoon, he attended a briefing and visited the Nanga Menuan Kapit ferry site as well toured the Baleh Dam access road.

The ferry will be built to connect Jalan Nanga Menuan to Jalan Kapit-Song.

In the long run, the ferry will be able to connect Jalan Kapit-Nanga and Jalan Tulie-Merit as well as connect Jalan Ulu Ibau, Melipis and then to Jalan Tada-Kanowit-Sibu.

“Based on the briefing by JKR Kapit and JKR Wilayah Tengah, there are several sectors of the road package that have experienced delays due to certain factors,” Aidel said.
