KUCHING: Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir has stressed that Sarawak’s decision to offer free education for Sarawakians from 2026 is a fundamental prerogative of the state.

The Higher Education Minister reiterated that the education policy and initiatives are determined by the state government, underscoring their authority in shaping educational decisions for Sarawak.

“Much like other states in Malaysia, Sarawak has its own policy to help and assist the people, especially the children who want to pursue education.

“If the state has the ability to do so, I would say why not,” he said.

He said this when met by the media after visiting i-CATS University College here on Tuesday (March 4).

Earlier reports stated that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the state government will provide free education to over 25,000 prospective students in all state-owned universities and higher learning institutions (IPTs), starting from 2026.

He said recognising the transformative impact of education, the state government is steadfast in its commitment to supporting underprivileged parents and students.

The commitment is epitomised by this groundbreaking initiative, he said, pointing to the importance of human capital development.

The forward-thinking approach, said Abang Johari, underscores the government’s dedication to fostering educational opportunities and nurturing the aspirations of the next generation.

Present during the visit were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis; and other distinguished guests.
