KUCHING: Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom has stressed the importance of collective responsibility among pet owners to ensure the wellbeing and health of their pets.

The Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development said that pet owners who could not afford medical expenses for their pets should be assisted from time to time.

“This is because those who have pets, they can afford medical expenses for their pets.

“But for those who cannot afford, the responsibility lies on all of us collectively, so for anyone who knows pet owners who cannot afford such medical expenses, it is important to assist them as much as we can.”

Dr Rundi made these remarks during a press conference after officiating at the 22nd Federation of Asian Veterinary Association (FAVA) Congress held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching today (Nov 3).

He also emphasised the importance of the state studying ways to improve the wellbeing of animals.

“We are being tasked as a policymaker to make sure how we are going to facilitate not only the enforcement of the law but also to work together with those who are handling the animals.

“This is to make sure that we are able to address future problems regarding animals as we move forward.

“Most important thing for us as a region, we must share the responsibilities in order to make sure the world is safe for us to live in, and also the animals.”
