MIRI: Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is optimistic that Miri could emerge as a crucial tourism destination in the state.

“Miri has great tourism potential and my ministry has some major plans to help boost its tourism sector,” he said at a Chinese New Year 2020 gathering organised by the Sarawak Chinese Association at a leading hotel here on Friday.

He revealed that some major infrastructures would be built at Niah and Mulu caves to enhance their tourism appeal.

“I believe Miri can be one of the best tourism destinations in future,” he said.

Citing the discovery of a turtle shell inside Niah Cave, Abdul Karim is optimistic that it could give some major boost to Miri as a tourism destination.

“The discovery of the turtle shell inside the cave showed that humans there, thousands of years ago, were living adjacent to the shoreline,” he said.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting; Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau; and Sarawak Chinese Association adviser Datuk James Ling Suk Kiong.
