KUCHING: The federal government is committed to encourage more chartered flights to Sarawak in line with the objectives of Visit Malaysia 2020 (VM2020) campaign.

Secretary-general to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry Datuk Isham Ishak, said improving the state’s air connectivity was crucial for promoting Sarawak’s ecotourism sector to attract more international tourists especially Europeans.

He said, Sarawak’s eco-tourism is more preferred by Europeans. Although the numbers of visitors are small, they tend to spend more.

The effort now, according to him, is to have joint-venture and coach-sharing between Malaysia Airlines with international airlines, for example in Langkawi now we will have Qatar Airways coming in.

“For Sarawak, we are also doing the same, but some airlines do not want to come in first. They want to test the market,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters during a visit to the Kampung Darul Islam Belimbing Homestay in Puncak Borneo here, yesterday.
