NUMEROUS skill development programmes are being introduced to empower locals to be able to contribute more to the growth of the economy and ultimately improve their socio-economic status.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, said human capital enhancement is important as it acts as the main catalyst for the state to continue to develop in line with Industry 4.0.

He said the programmes include Digital Talent, which focuses on enhancing the development of digital expertise among the state’s young workforce.

“This programme will provide opportunities to jobseekers — especially those affected by the global pandemic — to upskill, reskill and retool themselves with digital skills.

“This will be carried out by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs),” he said when tabling the 2021 State Budget yesterday (Nov 9)

He said this also includes the Graduates Enhancement Training Sarawak (Gets) 4.0 programme.

“This is a 12-month on-the-job training internship for graduates to acquire industry-relevant skills and enhance employability.

“An allocation of RM7.6 million will be provided next year and will benefit about 400 graduates,” he said.

Another programme to be implemented is on Greater Promotion of Technical and Vocational Education.

The chief minister said the state government will intensify its effort to develop highly trained technical workforce to meet the demand of the industries such as oil and gas, electrical and mechanical industries and many more.

“Under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), the state has allocated RM261 million to enhance as well as establish new branches of Centexs namely in Kuching, Lundu, Betong, Dalat and Lawas.

“This effort will continue where a sum of RM67.0 million will be made available next year,” he said.
