Motorcycle thief arrested and jailed

SIBU: A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 15 months jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for stealing a motorcycle.


Abang Nur Hidayat Effandi of Kampung Baharu pleaded guilty to the charge read and explained to him before Magistrate Romario Jonol.


He was charged with stealing a Modenas Kriss type motorbike at Tuanku Osman street on April 9 at about 1.40 pm.


The offence was framed under Section 379 (1) of the Penal Code which carries an imprisonment of not less than one year and not more than seven years as well as liable to fine, upon conviction.


According to fact of case, on April 9 at about 1 pm, the complainant a 22 year-old parked his motorcycle which was registered under his mother’s name at a parking lot at Tuanku Osman street.


On the same day at 5.30 pm, the complainant found that his motorcycle was missing, and subsequently lodged a police report.


Acting on information received, on April 15 at about 9 pm, a team of police led by Inspector Andrew Umdum proceeded to a lodging hotel at Jalan Kampung Nyabor and arrested the accused.

The accused then led police to the recovery of the stolen motorcycle in the vicinity.


Police investigation revealed that on April 9 at about 1.40 pm, the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage had captured the accused stealing the motorcycle which was reported missing by the complainant.


Based on the evidence, the accused committed an offence under Section 379A (1) of the Penal Code.


The case was handled by prosecuting officer Inspector Kumeswaran Murugan while the accused was not represented by legal counsel.
