SIMANGGANG: The Works Ministry is talking to the Transport Ministry (MOT) to implement safety measures along the Pan Borneo Highway to ensure the safety of road users and to prevent damages to the road structure.

Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the measures included the implementation of speed traps and weigh-in-motion system to detect overweight vehicles.

“One of the challenges in Malaysia is heavy vehicles. When the load is heavy, it quickly damages the road.

“With the weigh-in-motion system, the scales will be placed on the road, and passing vehicles will be weighed automatically,” he told a press conference during the FTRoadpedia tour here today.

He said another common issue tied to newly upgraded roads such as the Pan Borneo Highway was speeding.

He explained that this had become a challenge as road users were seemingly unaware that they were driving over the speed limit.

“This is a common issue in West Malaysia. Driving over the speed limit may cause harm to speeding drivers and other road users.

“As the roads get better, we advise drivers to drive more prudently and carefully to avoid road accidents,” he said.

Additionally, he said the current speed limit along the Pan Borneo Highway remained at 90km/h.

“However, we may propose an increase to 100km/h for the speed limit.”
