SIMANGGANG: Handicraft making holds the key to preserving cultural heritage, Sri Aman MP Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie has stressed.

She noted that handicraft making plays a significant role in safeguarding cultural heritage, promoting the cultural identity of communities, bolstering the local economy through the creative industry, and fostering social and economic development by providing learning and job opportunities.

“Handicraft making requires interest, as through passion, it can evolve into a sustainable source of income if strategically planned and effectively marketed.”

She made these remarks during the inauguration of the Sugu Tinggi – Iban Handicraft Making Course at the Sri Aman Civic Hall here recently.

Additionally, she underscored the diversity of handicrafts that can be showcased, besides Sugu Tinggi.

“Other potential handicrafts include hand-woven buri cloth, pua kumbu, and beading. The sale of finished handicrafts can indirectly contribute to augmenting household income.”

She further disclosed plans to implement various programmes related to handicraft making and agriculture aimed at enhancing household income for residents within her constituency.

Meanwhile, Mitz Agency founder Roselind Ngali said the Sugu Tinggi making course has been conducted in Balai Ringin and subsequently in Kanowit, Sri Aman, and Tatau.

Roselind, who began teaching Sugu Tinggi making in 2017, expressed hope that the course will yield more skilled individuals proficient in Sugu Tinggi making to prevent its extinction.

“It is hoped that participants can create their own Sugu Tinggi products, starting perhaps with crafting for their own families and eventually for sale.”
