SIBU: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) members have been reminded to consult its leadership before arriving at any decision on matters that will have a bearing on the coalition.

In making this call, its secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this to prevent hurting the political stability the coalition has achieved within the state government.

Citing moves by one GPS component party wanting to forge collaboration with an opposition party as an example, Nanta emphasised that it has made other GPS component parties feel uncomfortable.

“We must fight this kind of ‘idea’. We can accept it if it was agreed to (by GPS leaders), with a proper discussion with our leaders. We don’t want our political stability impacted,” he said at the PBB Sibu Zone’s Special Convention here today (Nov 5).

Nanta, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general stressed that GPS component parties should be sincere and loyal to each other to ensure the stability of politics in Sarawak.

“The key is to have a political stability, then Sarawak can be administered to achieve what has been laid out in so many ways. We have been very lucky and we look forward to even more.

“Without stability, as we can see across the sea … we must ensure (our) political stability and indeed (will) enjoy the fruits of our ideas and efforts.

“Therefore, it is important that component parties in GPS are loyal, transparent and sincere,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, on the convention, Nanta stressed that PBB is more than a political organisation.

“It is a movement that represents the aspirations of the people of Sarawak, especially the Bumiputera in Sarawak. This party has crawled, crept, walked, and finally run alongside the state in achieving various socio-economic progress.

“All of this could not have been achieved without the strong spirit and understanding among the party’s previous leaders, who first looked forward with determination to liberate the people of this state from the shackles of poverty, providing the best education opportunities that can pave the way for sustainable economic, social, and development opportunities in the Land of the Hornbills,” he said.

He added that maintaining the achievements of past leaders is even more challenging.

“The early pioneers have paved the way for us, and now it is up to us to continue the mission of PBB to bring Sarawak to a brighter level. If not us, the children of Sarawak, then who else?

“Therefore, it is important for all of us to unite and not take things for granted. A paradigm shift in thinking and intellect, especially among young leaders, is necessary with a broader and more comprehensive vision, viewing the future of politics in this state from a bird’s eye view, no longer from a narrow perspective.

“I must state here that Premier and PBB president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has shown us how his forward-looking vision has successfully led Sarawak to achieve various successes,” he said

Nanta said many achievements have been attained, likening it to ‘kek lapis, selapis demi selapis’.

“Like ‘kek lapis’ (layered cake), it has various ‘colours’ and ‘flavours’, meeting the needs and desires of all layers of the multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multicultural society in the Land of the Hornbills,” he said.

Also present were PBB deputy presidents Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, senior vice presidents Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and permanent chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar.
