National women’s rugby squad eye medal finish at Asia 7s

LABUAN: The national women’s rugby squad have successfully completed their intensive centralised training in this duty-free-island here in preparation for the upcoming  Asia Rugby U20 Men’s and Women’s Sevens on August 19-20 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Deputy chef-de-mission Sukor Ashak said the athletes showed remarkable determination and dedication during training, raising hope for a strong showing in the highly anticipated competition.

“Under the guidance of experienced coaches and trainers, the squad underwent rigorous training sessions aimed at honing their skills and enhancing teamwork.

“The players focused on various aspects of the game, including agility, stamina, strategy and communication.

“The commitment displayed by the athletes during their training camp has undoubtedly positioned them as formidable contenders in the forthcoming tournament,” he said after the handing over of the Jalur Gemilang by Labuan Sports Council chairman Rithuan Ismail to squad captain Zaryssa Awang Daniel at Dorsett Grand Hotel here today.

Rithuan said women’s rugby has shown remarkable progress in recent years, and the Malaysian women’s rugby squad’s participation in the Asia U20 Rugby Sevens is a testament to their dedication and hard work.

“We are proud to see our young athletes stepping onto the international stage with determination and passion…their commitment is an inspiration to aspiring female athletes across the nation.

“The Asia U20 Rugby Sevens tournament promises to be a thrilling and competitive event, with teams from across the continent vying for supremacy.

Zaryssa, who is from Labuan, said her squad is a blend of players from various states across the country, and they now look forward to bringing back a medal.

A total of 11 teams will participate in the tournament, and in the men’s competition, teams from Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, India, Hong Kong China, and Uzbekistan will compete for the title.

Meanwhile, the women’s competition will see the hosts, Nepal, taking on Hong Kong China, Malaysia, and Thailand in what promises to be a captivating battle. –  BERNAMA
