BAU: Bau district will have a surplus supply of treated piped water by the end of 2020.  Work to upgrade the water supply covering Bau and Lundu districts costing RM130 million is currently ongoing.

“The project is expected to be completed by end of 2020 and when fully operational, Bau will receive 41 million litres of water a day to be supplied to 64,000 people in Bau,” said Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep to the media during a visit to the Bau Water Treatment Plant here on Wednesday.

He added that Bau would receive the supply from two sources – from the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant and Bau Water Treatment Plant, adding that the supply was more than enough to cover commercial and industrial premises in the district.

Henry said the work involved laying of new main pipelines and replacing the old asbestos pipelines with mild steel cement pipes.

“While waiting for the completion of the main pipelines, the state government has provided funds for the laying of the sub-main lines and I’m also disbursing my Rural Transformation Projects (RTP) allocations for the same purpose.”

He urged contractors of the Pan Borneo Highway project to be more diligent to minimise water supply interruption, especially in Bau. Pointing out that such interruptions had been frequent, Henry advised the contractors to move the underground pipelines first before doing digging works for the road projects.

“There have been so many occurrences of disruption of water supply in Bau area and I wish to advise those Pan Borneo Highway contractors to be more diligent to relocate the underground pipelines before digging.

“The people are tired of this disruption,” he said, adding that those contractors should be more sensitive to issues regarding the local populace.

He added that the government provided big fundings for the relocation purposes, which he said should be fully utilised by the contractors.

Henry urged the Rural Water Supply Department (Jbalb) to strictly monitor the contractors to make sure they adhere to procedures.
