36 arrested in 23 raids

KUCHING: Sarawak police continued the fight against illegal gambling by raiding more illegal gambling outlets last week, said Sarawak CID chief, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar. Dev said from 27 November to 3 December, the state police conducted 23 successful gambling raids which resulted in the arrest of 36 individuals.

The raids were conducted by teams from CID HQs and district CIDs. CID HQs conducted a raid in Bintulu, Kuching and Padawan CID conducted five raids each, Sibu and Miri CID conducted three raids each while Kota Samarahan, Sarikei, Bau, Sri Aman, Marudi and Dalat CID conducted one raid each.

“Efforts to eradicate illegal online gambling continued with raids conducted at 24-hour convenience stores and coffee shops offering reload services to online gamblers. Four raids were conducted in Bintulu, Padawan, Sri Aman and Sarikei which resulted in the arrest of seven service providers and seizure of six tablets and cash amounting to RM6,842,” he added.

Eighteen raids were conducted at counters selling illegal 4D in nine districts. The raids resulted in the arrest of 19 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM6,717, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery. A raid was conducted in Sibu which resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals for playing ‘Holo’.

Gambling paraphernalia and cash amounting to RM490 were also seized. Of the 36 arrestees, 21 were males while the rest were females. They were aged between 17 and 58 years. Two of those arrested are foreigners. A ll those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953.
